With most of
the filming done in 1998, this video was released in 1999, celebrating
the 25 years since the Ailsa was introduced to the bus market at the
Scottish Motor Show at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow in November 1973.
With lots of
contemporary footage of Ailsas in Derby, Llangollen, Glasgow, Cardiff,
and Dundee, even only three years on, a large proportion of the vehicles
filmed are no longer in service at these locations.
An extensive
section, including Super 8 cine film taken by Keith Breeden, covers
the unique Van Hool bodied Ailsas ordered by South Yorkshire PTE, and
with images of Ailsas in Hong Kong and Jakarta, the variations of Ailsas
are comprehensively covered.
How the Ailsa
was conceived is recounted by the designer of the vehicle, Norman Watson,
who tells where the engine may have been placed. The bus could have
been rear-engined, or even under-floor engined!
